GWSS graduate teaching assistant Madeline Hunsicker has received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award! In 2021-2022, Madeline has served as a TA for GWSS:1001 Introduction to Gender, Women's & Sexuality Studies in the fall, and SJUS:2250 History of Social Justice Movements in the spring. Dr. Caroline Radesky, her supervising professor, states "Madeline has the rare ability of meeting her students where they are and engages with them on an individual level. She does so through encouraging open communication and decolonizing the classroom by empowering her students to take control of their education and create knowledge. I have had many of Madeline’s students come to me with their positive experiences. They have described her classroom as “safe and inviting” and even “life-changing.” One student wrote "Teachers like Madeline set the bar high because they know you can achieve it. Madeline challenged us to become better versions of ourselves." Another said "Madeline is an amazing educator. She is brilliant in the sense that she provides her students with a safe and intersectional space to learn, think critically about the concepts discussed, and challenge ideologies and notions in our society today." A third reported "I admired her as an instructor and as a person for never backing away from difficult topics or discourse, and faced any suggestions or oppositions head on with an open mind, creating a safe yet confident space to discuss content week by week. She pushed us to think critically about not just the material but the environments around us."
The faculty, staff and students of GWSS offer our congratulations, Madeline!
